The Up from the Sewer Tour Obliterates the Belasco
Photos and words by Steve Rose
The highly successful Up From the Sewer tour featuring a stacked bill consisting of The Black Dahlia Murder, After the Burial, Carnifex, Rivers of Nihil, and Undeath made a stop in Los Angeles at the Belasco. Like many other dates on this tour, the show was sold out and fans were wrapped around the building eager to get in and get their spot.
With strong sets by both Undeath and Rivers of Nihil, the crowd was primed and ready for Carnifex to take the stage. A pair of lit pentagrams shone through the smoke as the lights went out and Carnifex began. Feeding off the energy of the crowd, the band delivered an inspiring set with fans as far back as the merch table yelling the lyrics back at the band. Next up was After the Burial. Before they started, guitarist, Trent Hafdahl, announced that the band’s singer, Anthony Notarmaso, would not be joining them on stage - and asked for the crowd’s help with vocals as the band were going to be playing the whole set as planned, just without vocals. It was different, it was powerful, and it worked. Closing out this night of metal were The Black Dahlia Murder. As soon as the band’s scrim was displayed, a “dah - li- ahhh” chant began swelling up from the crowd; reaching its peak as everything went black and the band took the stage. The band put on a killer show with each member working every bit of the stage and getting everyone fired up. Their 18 song set featured material from seven of the band’s albums and it was nonstop energy the whole time.
If this tour is making a stop in your town, don’t miss it!
