Primus brought their electrifying performance to the picturesque Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles, CA on a balmy July evening. Before the trio took the stage, New York-based art rockers Gorilla Toss warmed up the crowd with their infectious beats, prompting spontaneous dancing and enthusiastic cheers from the audience.
As anticipation mounted, chants of "Primus sucks" reverberated through the amphitheater, a beloved phrase that fans use to express adoration for the band. Finally, amidst the uproar of excitement, Les Claypool, Larry LaLonde, and Tim Alexander emerged to the familiar strains of Danny Elfman's "Clown Dream," igniting a frenzy of applause and cheers.
Kicking off their set with the thunderous "Too Many Puppies," Primus immediately whipped the crowd into a frenzy, setting off a wild mosh pit and inspiring daring bouts of crowd surfing. "Harold of the Rocks" followed, though not without Les Claypool playfully questioning the change in their setlist order, jokingly blaming their manager for throwing off their groove.
Les Claypool's charismatic stage presence shone through as he regaled the audience with his trademark wit and storytelling between songs. Known for their unpredictable live performances, Primus delighted fans with a selection of hits including "Over The Falls," "Mr. Krinkle," "Mrs. Blaileen," and "Over the Electric Grapevine," each song showcasing their virtuosity and unique blend of funk, rock, and experimental sounds.
While this particular night didn't feature Coheed and Cambria, who are also part of the tour lineup, the evening was a testament to Primus's enduring appeal and their ability to captivate audiences with their boundary-pushing music and theatrical stage presence. For fans of musical innovation and live performances that defy expectations, catching Primus on tour is a must-do experience not to be missed.
