What an incredible privilege it was to hear Rick Nielsen's fantastic guitar tone ring out triumphantly on Friday evening at Humphreys Concerts By The Bay. Rock and Roll legends Cheap Trick were the first concert of the year at Humphreys and dramatically kicked off the venue's 2021 season. The last show at the Shelter Island institution took place over a year and a half ago, and for many fans the night was quite emotional. A sold-out San Diego crowd eager for the return of live music packed the outdoor venue and were treated to a beautiful sunset and a fantastic set of classic rock. Dozens of boats, kayaks and rafts packed with advantageous fans also lined the waterway just yards from the stage in this uniquely San Diego setting.

The current touring lineup of Cheap Trick features frontman Robin Zander, guitarist Rick Nielsen, bassist Robin Taylor Zander (son of Robin) filling in for an injured Tom Petersson, and drummer Daxx Nielsen (son of Rick). Despite the slight change in personnel the band sounded tight and played through a long set of classic hits including “I Want You To Want Me,” “Dream Police,” “Surrender,” and newer material with songs from their 2021 album In Another World. Cheap Trick have a packed schedule with dates booked all across the US before they head abroad for an international tour in November.

This show was such a great return to concerts in San Diego! Look forward to more great shows at Humphrey's through November with many dates already selling out.
